Hemodynamics

Blood pressure and heart rate vary within and between days because of biological variability and measuring factors, including equipment. White coat hypertension refers to the higher blood pressure measured in a Doctors office compared to at home readings because of anxiety and activity. What is my blood pressure and heart rate variability when most factors are kept constant? Do the values of these hemodynamic variables change within and between days?

Systolic blood pressure (SBP), Diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and heart rate (HR) were measured over four months during which time diet, exercise and sleep patterns were not altered. Mean BP was calculated as DBP + 1/3 PP (Pulse Pressure). HR was that measured during BP measurements.

The Oxiline Pressure XS Pro system was used for all measurements. Each measurement was taken in the left arm after sitting quietly for at least 5 minutes at a desk. The second trial occurred after at least 1 minute. AM measurements were taken shortly after awakening and a walk into the home office. PM measurements were in the early evening prior to bedtime again after a walk into the office.

Shown below are distributions of AM and PM Systolic Blood Pressure (SYS, SBP), Diastolic Blood Pressure (DIA, DBP), Pulse (Heart Rate, HR) and mean arterial pressure (BP Mean, MAP).

More formal analyses of these data are presented later.

The data were analyzed using JMP statistical software. A repeated measures analysis if variance was used with Trial, Day and Trial by Day interaction effects.
