Education

Education was strongly emphasized by my parents. That belief is an intrinsic part of my value system. Education is the means by which individuals can succeed and by which society as a whole can progress. It is the system for individual improvement regardless of social or economic status. The following shows my progression through this system.

Glenwood School

Still located a short distance (maybe < 0.5 miles) away from my Springfield, MA home. I remember my kindergarten teacher, Miss Parmalee (sp?), who lived in a big house at the corner of Newbury and Liberty St. We used tom play basketball (8 foot hoop), softball and fast pitch in the school yard.

On Morrison Ave in front is a round-about where kids were dropped off and some teachers parked. We walked to school through the playground in the back.

Now called Van Sickle Academy. We used to play pick up basketball on some evenings in either the boy's or girl's gym located on the each side of the school.

Destroyed by tornado in 2011, merged with Holyoke Catholic High School in 2016 to become Pope Francis Preparatory School at the old Holyoke Catholic location. Records were destroyed which is why I am not hounded any further for alumni donations!

Purple Panthers was our nickname. I still have the Panther Pix Yearbook 1969, in which I am NOT prominently featured; only the standard portrait and that I was a member of the National Honor Society. Not very social during these years.

Undergraduate: BS

University of Massachusetts Amherst

A one year scholarship in chemistry after which I switched to the academic study of Exercise Science in the School of Physical Education. Let it be noted that I did very well in chemistry during my freshman year but my interests lie with exercise and sports. My physical attributes did not align with becoming a member of any particular sports team.

Orchard Hill Dorms

My residence during undergraduate at UMass was way up on Orchard Hill which was far away from the Southwest Towers; initially the all-male Webster Hall and then later to the coed Emily Dickerson Hall. These dorms had a full basketball court on which I played some; a fortuitous encounter occurred here in a pick-up game with "Dr. J " (Julius Irving, future NBA star) with 8 of his friends and little me-it might of been my ball!

Boyden Gymnasium in which one found the Exercise Physiology Lab of Dr. William Ricci. I actually slept in the little room in back of the lab during part of my senior year; my car broke down so travel back to Springfield was problematic.

Michigan Stadium, home of the Wolverines, was the largest college football stadium. I went to several football games (click to see the ticket stubs I kept).

Central Campus Recreation Building (CCRB) used to house the Exercise Science Department but was demolished in 2023. The new building is called the Hadley Family Recreation & Well-Being Center. Victor Katch inspired me to research and write. We had a great team including Art Weltman, Patty Freedson. Bob Moffatt, and John Villanacci,
